Fallow deer are found mostly in Europe. They are highly prized due to their ornamental antlers and their vibrant variety of coat colors. Coat colors range from red, brown, black and even pure white coats. A black band runs along the back to the tail with often white spots on their back during the summer. Their coats become darker and thicker during the winter and the spots become more faint. Fallow buck antlers can measure up to 70 centimeters in height. Calves are born with coats that are very similar to the adult summer coat.
Fallow in the wild are active at all times of the day, however, in captivity where human interaction is usually higher, they tend to be more active at night. They often graze on grasses and rushes but are also known to browse on young leaves, berries and acorns.
Most of the year, males and females occur in single sex groups and large herds of fallow deer can coexist peacefully in open areas where food is plentiful. Rut for fallow deer usually occurs in October and November. Males hold ‘rutting stands’ to different groups of females. Rutting behavior involves displaying, including groaning contest and parallel walks that may escalate to physical contest which the males lock antlers and push each other.
